I recently worked on a United Way campaign for St. John. To begin they needed a t-shirt that would be worn by St. John volunteers for the United Way Day of Caring, and also sold to raise money for the campaign. That design would be integrated into other projects like emails, web graphics, and printed signs. The client was very open to my ideas and didn't have a lot of constraints to offer. They liked the design I did last year, which was mostly typographic in nature. In that design I'd used a script font, and it gave me the idea to try some hand drawn type in this year's design. I used my Pilot parallel pen and a Pentel fude brush pen and set to work creating a lettering style. I put everything on a an angled grid, and once I had something close to what I wanted I scanned it. I put it into Photoshop and cleaned it up. Imported it into Illustrator, vectorized it, and cleaned it up further. My goal was to tighten everything up, while maintaining the hand drawn look of the lettering. I got a lot of positive feedback on the final design, and people seemed to really like the t-shirt.
